The French Illusion

As yet another  peace process attempt is being made by France and their European neighbors, there is still a fantasy that it will be revived. Each time these efforts have been made the Israeli Palestinian relationship gets worse and worse with more violence, more death and more lies. The media atmosphere becomes even more absurd in blaming Israel even for unprovoked Palestinian crimes.

Our Palestinian partners are not even concealing their role in the incitement to murder Jews . The daily propaganda that is heard on the Palestinian street is fanned by the Palestinian Authority. They are the “responsible” body which is bankrolled by the United States government and the European Union.

The Europeans and to a lesser extent the American administration has turned a blind eye to the Palestinian violence. The best we get are statements from US officials blaming “both sides.” However, the media does not have even these compunctions, they falsify headlines that are intended to conceal Palestinian crimes. For example earlier in the year, BBC wrote a headline that read: “Palestinian shot after Jerusalem stabbing attack kills two.” An accurate headline for this story would have made clear that the Palestinian that was shot had stabbed three innocent Israelis, killing two.

It is in this context that the French peace initiative is taking hold. The notion that peace is possible between the Palestinians and the Israelis is fiction.

Everyone seems to be ignoring the fact that establishing a Palestinian State in the West bank, which is controlled by Mahmoud Abbas with his rejection of Israel and inciting hatred of Jews and a separate territory in the Gaza strip controlled by Hamas with its terror infrastructure is not going to lead to peace, but war.

Furthermore, the climate in the EU has become toxic, an example, in the UK, the Labour party led by Jeremy Corbyn has been rocked by revelations that his party showed how hatred of Israel became open anti-Semitism among his party faithful. The EU has now began labelling settlement products in stores throughout the European Union, including Germany, where Jews were singled out for boycott by the Nazis in the 1930’s, and the BDS movement has gained more strength.

In this hateful environment how is Israel expected to make compromises with the Palestinians. The EU and the Obama administration are demanding that Israel surrender all the territories  including Jerusalem, that it captured almost fifty years ago in the 1967 war,. That is non negotiable for Israel. The Palestinians also are not going to give up their demand for their “right of return.”

Meanwhile, the Arab world is exploding all around us without any end in sight. If there was even the chance of success in the peace process, it would be built on castles of sand on these beaches of the Mediterranean.

Now is not the right time for restarting the peace process with the Palestinians.

The Obama deal with Iran has destabilized the Middle East. The Sunni Muslims are so frightened, that the issue with the Palestinians is the last thing on their minds. Actually, Israel has de facto become the umbrella acting as the deterrent from Iranian threat for the Saudis and the Gulf Arabs and the Egyptians and the Jordanians.!

Israel should rely only on itself when it comes to ensuring its survival  the peace process  would leave Israel with the weakest assurances by the EU and the Americans. After all, if the Western World does not even have the will to stop the hundreds of thousands  of slaughtered Syrians  why would Israel be assured of a better fate.
